Dogs and cats that are left out in the cold - 32* and below - can die from hypothermia. They can get frostbite which may necessitate amputation of legs or feet. Dogs and cats can develop lung and breathing problems when taking in frigid air night after night. Even if they survive being left in the cold, their immune systems are comprised and arthritis is a given for dogs left outside all winter.
Please be kind and responsible and take pets indoors in the winter, especially at night when it is below 32*.
Dog houses help - but they should be insulated and have straw or dry blankets and a flap or door covering. Also consider moving the dog house into a barn or another structure to provide more shelter from wind and snow.
Our pets and hunting dogs cannot tell us they are suffering, but according to area vets like Dr. Allen and others - they do feel the cold every minute they are left out in it.....literally.
For more information contact your vet, humane organizations in your community, local animal shelters. If you see a pet without any shelter, or proper winter shelter - call your local animal shelter or animal control immediately to report this. Dog houses, straw, extra blankets may be available. Friends of Animals in Madison County often has dog houses and straw for pet owners.
