Call during office hours (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM; Closed Wednesday and Friday) for more information or to register your cat or dog.
Procedure
The evening before and the day of the Surgery (Monday):
- The evening before the clinic food should be withheld at 10 pm but water should always be available. The morning of the clinic you should feed your pet 1/4 of their normal breakfast.
- Water should be available at all times.
- If your cat is indoor/outdoor or always outdoor, you should keep the cat indoors the day before the clinic.
On the day you've signed up your cat or dog for the surgery (always a Monday), you will bring your animal to our office in Marshall between 6:45 to 7:30 am.
- The day the surgery is scheduled you should bring your pet to our office between 6:45 and 7:30am.
- Dogs should be on a leash and cats in a carrier.
- We will supply the cat carrier if you need one.
The surgery itself is done at the ASPCA Spay-Neuter Alliance in Asheville later that day.

The dogs and cats are kept overnight and returned to our office on Tuesday, between 11:00 and 11:30
- You will return between 11:15 am to 12 noon on Tuesday morning to pick up your animal friend.
- At that time, you will receive an instruction sheet on post-operative care.
- If your dog is Neutered or Spayed and lives outdoors, please keep the dog in the house for at least 24 to 48 hours after bringing the animal home
- This will help the animal heal and minimize complications.
- This is especially critical in the winter months.
If for any reason the roads are dangerous in the early morning, we are open Tuesday until 4 PM. So take your time and exercise caution. However, we cannot keep your pet overnight.
Call us to let us know that you will be delayed at 828-649-9798.
When to Spay?
Ideally, your dog should be altered before the first heat cycle.
- This normally occurs between five and six months of age.
- While each dog is different, a general estimate is that most dogs should be altered somewhere between four and six months of age.
And for female cats, the recommendation is the same.
- If you plan to keep your cat outside, it is wise to spay her early on, sometime between three and four months of age.
- If your animal is older, she/he can still be altered and benefit from it.
Weather cancellation (Winter months)
When snow and ice cause the roads to be treacherous, Humane Alliance will not send up a van.
- The clinic will be cancelled.
- Here's the rule: if Madison County cancels or delays school on the day of the clinic, then the clinic will also be cancelled. We know you will be happy to stay home that day, too.
- Our policy is to automatically transfer the animals signed up for one clinic to the next clinic, in the event of a cancelled clinic.
Microchipping
For an additional $5, a microchip can be placed under your dog or cat's skin. It's quick and painless, and contains a code which will make it possible to find your contact information.
Call our office at 828-649-9798 to sign up.
